FUNDING AND FUNDRAISING... Sam Sternberg (T.O. Freenet) said
that funds could result from making info providers into
donors as well. ie., show an information provider that
providing their information over the net is a much more
cost-effective approach, and with all this money we are
helping you save, how about using some of that money as a
donation to Freenet. In one group it was suggested that, to
help support freenets financially, volunteer public
subscriptions could be used, but some of our American
colleagues pointed out that this hasn't been a particularly
effective fundraising method for many public radio and
telvision stations in the US. HOW DO YOU RAISE MONEY TO RUN
YOUR FREENET, OTHER THAN BY BEGGING? It's possible to charge
information providers to put their information on the system.
You could also consider adding a menu item for commercials,
which would be paid for by advertisers. A couple of other
creative suggestions are to get corporate sponsors for some
of your phone lines or to get local computer stores, etc., to
donate equipment such as modems. The philosophy of freenets
is that "free" implies universal access to information, not
necessarily the provision of information at no cost.
