Community networking is the real cutting edge of the electronic
revolution. Every day we hear more and more about electronic highways,
networking, cyberspace... The real question is, how do ordinary
people get connected? FreeNets offer one solution. From its start in
the 1980's, the Cleveland Free-Net has inspired many other projects.
The concept has now become an international phenomenon, with Free-Nets
in Finland, New Zealand and Canada. Where do we go from here? The
National Capital Freenet, in association with the federal Department
of Industry and Science, sponsored an international conference on
community networking August 18 and 19, 1993, in Ottawa to talk about
that.
Over 150 people from across Canada and the United States attended. In
this menu item you will find copies of many of the papers, and reports
on the sessions of the conference. But the conference is not over.
It remains open to discussion around the world via FreeNets and the
Internet. The discussion space - is open to any topic listed
in the conference agenda, the session reports and papers, or any other
discussion about the future of FreeNets. If you have a National Capital
FreeNet account, you may post directly to the discussion. If you are a
visitor, send postings to:
aa102@freenet.carleton.ca,
and they will be posted for you. Welcome aboard!
