REPORT & RECOMMENDATION
to the Board of Directors, National Capital FreeNet
From the ED Search Committee
October 9, 2002
The Committee, with the help of NCF members, received eight serious applications for the position of Executive Director from which it developed a short-list of the four most promising candidates. Two were interviewed on Saturday, Oct. 5 and two on Tuesday, Oct. 8. All were experienced and well-qualified.
After careful review and lengthy discussion, the Committee unanimously voted to recommend that the Board appoint John Selwyn as the new Executive Director of NCF. He has an outstanding track-record in the high-tech field and we are confident that he has all the qualities, including dedication to the NCF 'concept,' to lead FreeNet onward and upward.
Our current ED Ian MacEachern has accepted a senior position with a large national organization and must begin there on Wednesday, Oct. 16. In order to expedite matters, the Committee recommends a Special Meeting of the Board of Directors be held via telephone conference call on Friday, Oct. 11 at 11.30 a.m. The details of the procedure for the conference call, kindly arranged by Director Andrea Holland through the good offices of Oracle Corporation, will be sent to you tomorrow (Thursday).
There will be only one item on the Agenda for this Special Meeting. Approval by the Board of the Search Committee's recommendation will allow the new ED to be introduced to staff Tuesday morning, to spend the day conferring with Ian, and to meet Board members at the scheduled Board meeting Tuesday evening, Oct. 15.
MOTION: That John Selwyn be appointed Executive Director of National Capital FreeNet and that President Chris Cope be authorized to negotiate and sign a contract for his services covering the period Oct. 15, 2002 to Oct. 14, 2003, under similar terms to the existing ED contract, minus the 'incentive' clause recently added.
